First Place - got sent home from abroad but at least we can do this!
Cash Prize: $1000 Team members: Madeleine Walker '21, Mary Pelson '21 (William & Mary) Our team developed a sustainable, no-interest microloan scheme to empower indigenous Guatemalan women to cultivate native leafy greens and create community gardens. This program encourages partnerships between indigenous female community entrepreneurs and local midwives to increase micronutrients in children’s diets. Project Contact: Mary Pelson |

Second Place - Novigado
Cash Prize: $700 Team members: Kareem Al-Attar '21, Abraham Haji '20, Meghana Boojala '22, Sam Bonham '21 (William & Mary) Our team used a byproduct of Guatemala’s main export, coffee, to produce a plastic that would create protective equipment like gloves, masks, and glasses. This would increase worker safety, reduce waste, and sustainably produce necessary products for Guatemalans in the coffee industry. Project Contact: Kareem Al-Attar |

Third Place - triple A
Cash Prize: $300 Team members: August Wagner '21, Austin Anderson '21, Antonio Marra '21 (William & Mary) Our project was centered around resolving land rights disputes in Guatemala, because uncertainty in land ownership limits economic growth as land goes unused and disputes promote violence. Our goal was to create a database with up to date information on land ownership and with the use of GIS technology called a Convolutional Neural Network we could predict which parts of native land that were at risk of potential encroachment. |
